WHAT A GAME ! This is exactly the type of stuff you are hoping to see coming off a big win. Could we finally be setting things turning around for the fighting phils? Survey says? Maybe ! Let’s get to the action and disect the game !
Jake Arietta has been a much better pitcher than expected during his first 2 games this season. A part of that could be due to the fact that he doesn’t have to be the number 2 in the rotation anymore. In 6 innings he gave up 0 runs, allowed 3 hits, struck out 6 batters and walked only 1. In 2 games so far Arietta is 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA while only allowing 3 runs, 10 hits, 1 walk and striking out ten batters. If there was ever a time for a Jake Arietta comeback tour it would be 2020.
Resign J. T. Realmuto ! Other than being the best catcher in baseball, he’s also leading the Phillies in home runs ! He’s had 3 home runs in 4 games, including today. If the Phillies have half a brain they will lock this man up ! Speaking of star players, Bryce Harper also had a nice day going 2-4 with a double and a single ! We also got some offense from Didi Gregorius going 2-4 and a RBI. If there was a star of today’s game on offense it had to be Jay Bruce. Bruce went 2-4 with a 3 run home run. He and J.T. Realmuto are tied with 4 home runs on the season. He and J.T. also lead the team in RBI’s. We may hate on Klentak for all the bone headed moves hes done but acquiring Jay Bruce isn’t one of them. On the season he’s batting .300, with 4 home runs and 8 RBI’s. Keep it up Jay!
Could the Phillies bullpen be turning around? Deolis Guerra the past 2 games has given up 0 hits,0 runs, 0 walks and has struck out 3 batters. He’s also picked up a win against the Yankees and his ERA has gone from 16.20 to 7.36 in just 2 games. While it’s still bad, it’s nice to see improvement. Another under the radar guy who’s actually been performing well has been Jose Alvarez. In 3 games he has a ERA of 0 while allowing 2 hits, 1 walk and has struck out 3 batters. Speaking of a comeback tour, it would appear Tommy Hunter was following the same advice. After pissing the bed against the Yankees, he had a nice turn around performance. He had a 4 out 8th and ninth inning performance. He gave up 0 hits, and struck out a batter during his 1.1 innings pitched. He also brought his ERA down going from 9.00 to 5.40. Who knows, with a season full of double headers maybe the bullpen won’t make us cry as much? With a double header against the Braves tommorow well find out out just how much crying will occur as The Sprint To The Finish continues !
