Another season has come and gone for the Philadelphia 76ers, with another early exit leaving fans in a state of frustration.

Joel Embiid, Paul Reed, Jeff Dowtin and Ricky Council IV are the only players currently under contract with the Sixers, but the franchise has a number of decisions to make this offseason.

This article will go through the entire 2023-24 roster and break down which players should remain in Philadelphia and who may be better suited elsewhere.

C Joel Embiid

Embiid was in the midst of a run at back-to-back MVP awards before a knee injury derailed yet another regular season. Prior to injury, he was averaging career highs in points, assists, steals, free-throw percentage and three-point percentage.

Unless the Sixers are offered Jesus Christ himself, under no circumstances should Embiid not be in Philadelphia next season.

F Tobias Harris

I’m not even going to waste my time breaking down Harris’ season. He’s gone.

G Buddy Hield

Before a 20-point outburst in game six of the Sixers’ first round series against the New York Knicks, Hield was credited with two points and two DNPs in the playoffs.

While his price tag may not climb to the nearly $20 million the Sixers paid him last season, he should not suit up for the franchise next season.

F Nicolas Batum

Batum was fine for the role he played last season, but was worth nowhere near the $11.7 million he was paid.

The team should consider bringing him back as a bench piece on a small contract, but nothing more than that.

F Robert Covington

Similarly to Batum, the Sixers should only bring back Covington as a small-contract depth piece. Anything more and the team should part ways with RoCo, again.

G De’Anthony Melton

After Tyrese Maxey, Melton should be one of the first calls made by the Sixers. His ‘three-and-d’ style perfectly fits what Nick Nurse wants to do with the roster. The price tag should remain affordable enough to keep him around.

Prior to a back injury, the former Memphis guard was averaging a career-high 11.1 points and he remained an elite level defender on the perimeter.

C Paul Reed

During his four seasons in Philadelphia, BBall Paul has developed a cult-like following amongst the Sixers’ fanbase. However, it is time to cut ties with Reed.

The Sixers have been a much worse team when Reed plays in place of Embiid, which became an even more glaring problem in the playoffs. Although he played limited minutes, Reed’s box plus-minus was among the worst of any non-starters in the postseason.

G Tyrese Maxey

Alongside Embiid, Maxey established himself as a true franchise cornerstone this season. Give him everything he wants this offseason and build around your two stars.

G Kyle Lowry

He’ll turn 38 years old in 2025, but Lowry will almost certainly be back with the team next season. As a Philly native and a long-time favorite of head coach Nick Nurse, Lowry’s contributions run much deeper than the box score.

Kelly Oubre Jr.

While he will likely demand more than the minimum contract he signed this, bringing back Oubre should be a no-brainer for the Sixers.

Similarly to Melton, his style fits what Nurse wants to do and it showed in the playoffs.

F Cameron Payne

If the Sixers had not made the playoffs, Payne probably would not return to the team.

However, after once again proving he can serve as a spark off the bench in the playoffs, he could very easily return on a minimum contract and serve virtually the exact same role.

C Mo Bamba

Simply because of how bad the back-up center situation was for the Sixers this season, Bamba should walk. Bring in a guy or two that complements Embiid’s style and forget about the disaster that this season was.

F Kenyon Martin Jr.

Martin showed some really good flashes during his time in Houston and he is still just 23 years old. Bring him back on a minimum contract and increase his role ever so slightly.

G Ricky Council IV

Council is one of four players currently under contract with the Sixers next season, so expect him to be back with the team. He was productive in very limited minutes and is still just 22 years old.

G Jeff Dowtin

Dowtin is the last player currently under contract with the Sixers, although the team has a club option to decide on this offseason. While the veteran guard was fine in his role as a reserve, declining his contract just gives Philadelphia another $2.1 million to play around with this offseason.

G Terquavion Smith

Smith’s overall efficiency remained a problem in extremely limited minutes this season, but his three-point shooting remains of interest to the Sixers. With no real role in sight, the Sixers may decide to let the NC State product walk.

Although, with such a low price tag, bringing Smith back presents virtually no risk to the organization as a whole.
