Prospect Background:

It’s not easy to catch the eyes of the national media especially when you’re a high school football player in Texas but sometimes you have to be willing to bet on yourself, even when your path takes you down an unorthodox trail.

After being a QB for most of his life, Adonai Mitchell transitioned to WR as a junior when he transferred from Ridge Point in Texas to Caine Ridge in Tennessee.

Though this move made some around him disappointed, he quickly showed why this was the best move for him and his future..

Like most high schools across the country, COVID impacted much of the 2020 season for Tennessee, so Mitchell re-classified and was enrolled into the Univeristy of Georgia by December of 2020, so there was no football played for him that season.

As a reward for his gamble, Mitchell was offered a scholarship to play college football at the University of Georgia. This is where despite his limited statistics, his impact was immediately felt across the games he played. For context, of his seven career touchdowns at Georgia, four came in College Football Playoff games.

However, with family on his mind and two national championships in his pocket, Mitchell decided to return home to Texas to finish off his collegiate career.

“That’s honestly been the best part. When I was away, you know, I didn’t get that. I didn’t get that time with my mom. I didn’t get that time with my family, and most of all, my daughter,” Mitchell said when asked about the transfer from Athens to Austin.

Prospect Overview:

Every draft cycle, there comes a time where tape and traits intersect and become one. I feel as if we are fairly close to that time with a guy like AD Mitchell. Let’s make one thing clear, for starters, this young man is still learning how to play this position with only about four years of experience and he already does it very well.

When you watch Mitchell it’s easy to see his tall and lanky 6-foot-2, 205 pound frame pop off the screen. Yet when you see his skillset, you see a receiver who is an advanced route runner. I appreciate how he uses his head to set up moves for defenders. He has a lot of stuff in that bag, particularly in the red zone where his size and route running acumen is a terror for defenders as he creates separation with ease.

His catch radius is almost out of this world with how he can make a QB right even if the location is wrong. Mitchell does a phenomenal job of adjusting his body in the air and putting himself in positions to find the football.

He offers some three level threat potential, but is most effective at the intermediate level of the field with 40.7% of his targets coming at that level. With that said, I am highly intrigued by what he can do as a vertical threat early in his career.

His late hands present themselves as a gift and a curse, as he often is able to haul in sideline receptions and contested catches due to this trait. At the same time, I would like to see him be more aggressive at attacking the football at its peak.

Mitchell offers an X receiver frame with playmaking potential at all 3 levels which should make him a high impact WR2/low end WR1 to start his career with potential to become THE guy down the road.
